The Port of Wilmington in North Carolina is a seaport much like any other on the eastern coast of the United States, it has good access to major Trans-Atlantic trade routes and serves the economy of North Carolina through the import and export of manufactured goods and raw materials, but it is also a part of the proud history of the state for it was here in the 1940s that one of North Carolina’s great contributions to the wartime effort took place.
The present day Port of Wilmington is the site of what was once a major shipbuilding yard, one that was presented with an immense challenge under the auspices of the Merchant Marine Act that was passed by a US government in 1936 as World War Two became inevitable and they realized the country was critically short of cargo ships.
